Overview

In this micro-credential, learners will learn about depressive disorders and common medication types to treat them.  Learners will recognize antidepressants that treat specific depressive disorders and will learn to determine which treatment option is best suited for which disorder. Additionally, they will discover the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of several antidepressants. Lastly, learners will be able to differentiate between common medications for depression and their usual daily dose and optimal peak times.

Learners who successfully complete the course will earn a digital badge and certificate of course completion that can be downloaded and shared via social media. 

You will have access to the course for 90 days to work through the content.


Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this micro-credential, you should be able to:

  • Identify how common depression is among Canadians

  • Recognize the three types of depressive disorders: major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and postpartum depression

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of depressive disorders

  • Recognize the various types of anxiety disorders

  • Recognize what "Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors" (SSRIs), "Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors" (SNRIs), "Cyclic Antidepressants" (TCAs), and "Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors" (MOIs) are and which types of depressive disorders they treat

  • Recognize the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of specific antidepressants, including SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, and MOIs

  • Identify some of the side effects and adverse reactions associated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, cyclic antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors
