Course Description

In this 45-hour self-directed online course, learners will be introduced to the different components of the Mental Status Examination.  Learners will explore the standardized observations and questions designed to accurately evaluate a client's mental state within a clinical setting. Lastly, learners will explore common mental illnesses, their signs and symptoms, and treatment options in order to conduct an accurate and thorough examination.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe basic information and concepts of common mental illnesses

  • Describe the types of treatments and approaches to treat common mental illnesses

  • Recognize common medications that are used to treat mental illnesses and their side effects

  • Evaluate the purpose of the Mental Status Examination and how it is used in diagnosing individuals with mental illnesses

  • Examine the Mental Status Examination in relation to health assessment and care planning

  • Evaluate the different components and terminology of the Mental Status Examination

  • Use the Mental Status Examination to assess and document the state of a client's mental health
