Overview

In this 30-hour self-directed online micro-credential, learners will be introduced to the Mental Health Act of Ontario.  Learners will discover topics such as key legislation, consent to treatment, substitute decision-making for treatment, assessment and hospitalization, options after assessment, involuntary patient, advisors and Community Treatment Order, and restraints.  Learners will also be able to apply their learning by reviewing a case study that examines appropriate assessment and treatment options.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this micro-credential, you should be able to:

  • Identify the purpose of the Mental Health Act and mental health law issues in Ontario

  • Recognize key legislation such as Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decisions Act, and PHIPA

  • Determine when the Health Care Consent Act is used and the factors related to capacity and consent to treatment

  • Analyze what is required as treatment options such as, course of treatment and plan of treatment

  • Determine when substitute decision makers are used to support with assessment and treatment options

  • Recognize the legal framework as it pertains to Ontario’s assessment and hospitalization

  • Decipher between the different assessment options available for individuals requiring treatment

  • Differentiate between voluntary and involuntary patients within hospital
