Micro-credential Overview

In this 30-hour self-directed online micro-credential, learners will explore how to care for individuals with pressure injuries in long-term care.  Learners will learn about the various types of skin tears and how to prevent them, as well as how to optimize skin tear management and evaluate moisturizers to help prevent skin tears. Learners will also explore skin frailty and how to assess skin frailty as a unifying concept for increased susceptibility to four conditions, including skin tears, pressure injuries, moisture-associated skin damage, and skin changes at the end of life. Learners will also learn how to differentiate lower leg cellulitis from stasis and lipodermatosclerosis and evaluate treatment for three conditions: cellulitis, stasis eczema and lipodermatosclerosis.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this micro-credential, learners should be able to:

  • Discuss how to document and treat various skin tears and types

  • Document different types of skin tears and pressure injuries

  • Determine which local dressing to use for different types of skin tears and wounds

  • Document how to maintain the skin integrity of patients with skin wounds and tears

  • Document how to maintain the skin integrity of patients with skin tears, including assessment and treatment

  • Discuss various assessment and treatment options for different skin related tears and wounds

  • Determine the considerations and symptoms and signs of patients who have "red legs"

  • Explain how to treat patients with heel injuries and other pressure injuries
