Micro-credential Overview

In this 40-hour online, self-directed course, learners will explore the various ways to care for individuals with geriatric psychiatric disorders.  Learners will analyze various treatment strategies to support older adults with mental health-related concerns, as well as develop strategies to address behavioural and psychological symptoms that are often seen within this population.  Learners will also develop appropriate assessment strategies, including how to assess older adults at risk for suicide.  Learners will recognize the signs and symptoms of various mental health-related disorders to better determine appropriate diagnoses, assessments, and treatment options.  Lastly, learners will refer to several case scenarios as they learn how to recognize, assess, care for and treat older adults with mental health-related disorders.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this micro-credential, learners should be able to:

  • Analyze the various treatment strategies to support older adults with geriatric mental health-related disorders

  • Develop strategies to address behavioural and psychological symptoms seen in older adults with mental health-related concerns

  • Discuss how to care for older adults with various mental health-related concerns, including assessment tools and treatment options

  • Develop appropriate assessment strategies for older adults that are at risk for suicide

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of various mental health-related disorders in older adults to determine appropriate diagnoses, assessments, and treatment options

  • Evaluate which medications are deemed appropriate for older adults with mental health-related disorders

  • Discuss what is required by law if elder abuse is occurring within long-term care homes

  • Describe capacity building, Power of Attorney for Personal Care and Property, and Advance Care Planning as it relates to older adults with mental health-related concerns
