Micro-credential Overview

In this 30-hour self-direct online micro-credential, learners will explore metabolic syndrome and screening for high-risk foot and leg ulcers.  Learners will recognize what the ABCDES approach is and how it can be used to treat patients with metabolic syndrome.  Additionally, learners will recognize who is at risk for diabetic foot and leg ulcers, especially for persons in resource-limited environments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this micro-credential, you should be able to:

  • Apply what to do in understanding the patient history and holistic health of the patient using the “ABCDES Approach”

  • Determine assessment changes that you might consider as you incorporate “VIPS” in treating the cause of a foot ulcer, as well as in your patient evaluations

  • Develop a plan of care to address patient-centered concerns regarding diabetic foot ulcers

  • Determine the considerations of debridement, infection/inflammation management and moisture management to the correct wound healing classification

  • Evaluate adjunctive therapies for individuals with diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers

  • Evaluate the cause of vascular ulcers

  • Discuss how vascular assessments are performed to determine if there is adequate perfusion to the wound to potentially heal

  • Discuss which pain assessments to consider to better understand the impact of pain on patients with lower leg ulcers

  • Discuss how to assess and document different types of wounds and potential risks for infection and inflammation
