In this 20-hour, self-directed online micro-credential, learners will explore foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities to design engaging and effective online training and professional development modules. Learners will explore how to conduct a needs assessment and task analysis, as well as be introduced to different instructional and learning design theories and how to apply them effectively in building engaging courses. Learners will explore design models, such as ADDIE and Backward Design, and learn how to use Bloom's Taxonomy to develop measurable, observable, and describable training learning outcomes and lesson objectives. 

Learners will also explore different learning theories, such as Universal Design for Learning, and how to design online modules and training resources that meet accessibility standards and accommodate learners with diverse backgrounds and needs. Lastly, learners will apply what they learned from the lessons in this micro-credential to complete a capstone competency-based assignment, providing them with the opportunity to design an eLearning module that can be used in the workplace.

Learners who successfully complete the course will earn a digital badge and certificate of course completion that can be downloaded and shared via social media.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Develop appropriate learning activities and exercises that support learners to achieve unit-level or lesson-level learning objectives.

  • Create assessments and rubrics using the "Backward Design" instructional design model to measure learners' ability to execute specified learning outcomes accurately.

  • Create measurable, observable, and describable module-level learning outcomes and unit-level learning objectives that support learners to achieve the learning outcomes.

  • Create a module overview that considers what will be taught, as well as the duration and delivery method to the target audience.

  • Conduct a needs assessment and job task analysis to gain insight into employee and organizational needs for professional development, learning and development, and training.
